Nancy Fowlkes enjoyed a successful career on Longwood's field hockey team and went on to become a coaching legend in the high school ranks. After lettering four years in field hockey from 1969-72, Fowlkes embarked on a decades-long coaching career at Frank W. Cox High School in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

At Cox, Fowlkes amassed an eye-popping a 394-55-20 record, 13 Virginia State Championships and 13 BHSL Beach District Championships before retiring after the 2001 season. During that 43-year stint from 1973-2001, She won seven of those state titles in succession and was named Virginia Field Hockey Coach of the Year five times (1982, 1990, 1992, 1996 and 1999). Additionally, she earned national recognition as a National Coach of the Year finalist in 1995 and 1998.

Fowlkes taught for 43 years at Cox High School and also held coaching positions for several other varsity teams, including football, gymnastics, track and field and cheerleading. During her coaching career, she was featured in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" section in the October 1995 issue, earning that recognition after securing her 270th career win and sixth consecutive state championship.
