Longwood University Athletics

June 2009 Update

Since Longwood’s transition to NCAA Division I, the question has been frequently raised, “When is Longwood going to get into a conference?” Unfortunately, there is still no definitive answer available. Although, as of May 14, there will be definite movement of conference members. Campbell University, currently a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, announced that they would return to the Big South Conference as of the 2011-2012 school year.

Many of the questions have shifted to, “What does Campbell leaving mean for Longwood?” Again, there is no clear indication of what effect it will have on our status; however, as I have noted in the past, Conference membership is dynamic and the movement of its members creates opportunities.  The aim of our administration is to ensure Campbell's departure from the Atlantic Sun creates positive possibilities for the Lancers. With the addition of Campbell, the Big South will shift to eleven members and thus result in an odd number of institutions, which sometimes can manifest issues of balance. In some situations, it is preferable to have an even number when dealing with conference memberships for matters such as scheduling of conference games.

University administration has been working to position Longwood as a potential member for the Big South and Atlantic Sun, as well as a number of other conferences, since we began the transition. This recent activity has the potential gaining a permanent affiliation. With that in mind, Dr. Cormier, the coaches and staff of the athletics department, and countless other, will continue to actively pursue a conference home for your Longwood Lancers ASAP.
