April 2009
The end of March and through much of the month of April on Longwood’s campus is award season. With the school year quickly winding down, the many of departments and academic disciplines across the University hold banquets and bestow special recognition to various students and organizations. Longwood Athletics holds two of its own, the Academic Awards and the Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, the latter of which will take place April 20.
The Academic Awards Banquet took place March 31. The department improved in participation numbers while inviting almost 90 student-athletes, cheerleaders, and student athletic trainers who maintained a 3.0 GPA or above for the previous two semesters. The night also provides the student-athletes an opportunity to thank the faculty and staff who assisted in their academic pursuits.
An academic highlight for the student-athletes has been the seniors majoring in the College of Business and Economics (COBE). Of the six awards the COBE presents, four were earned by our Longwood student-athletes.
Anna Steg (women’s basketball), earned the Academic Excellence Award in Marketing and
Carlos Garcia de Andoain (men’s tennis) was recognized as a member of Beta Gamma Sigma as well as winning the Academic Excellence Award in Finance.
Two 2008 graduates made merited honors through their post-eligibility course work. Elvis Cosic (men’s soccer) was recognized as a member of Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society and received the Virginia Society of CPA Award and the Wall Street Journal Award. Elena Triebskorn (women’s tennis) was also acknowledged as a member of Beta Gamma Sigma received the Academic Excellence ward in Economics, received the Delta Sigma Pi Key and the Owens and Minor Outstanding Senior in the College of Business and Economics.
Longwood student-athletes are also receiving awards for their efforts outside of classroom and away from the field of competition. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has done a lot over the past three years to develop and make a lasting impact at Longwood, in the Farmville community, and beyond. For their growing efforts this organization received the Cormier Citizen Leader Award. I would like to congratulate SAAC President,
Michelle Owen (women’s lacrosse) for the great achievements of this organization.
