FARMVILLE, Va. - After a grueling matchup with #5 North Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 28, things aren’t getting any easier for the team. Next up for the Lancers is #1 Wake Forest, who suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling to #3 Maryland. The game marks the Lancers second consecutive game against a top-five program, after the Lancers fell to the Tarheels 3-1.
Despite the loss, things are looking up for the Lancers, who pulled together as a team, keeping the Tarheels scoreless in the second half of their game. Super senior Carla Binnewies continued her scoring streak against UNC, putting in her team-leading eighth goal of the season and her fourth goal in three games. Goalkeeper Erin West and the rest of the Lancers defense also continue to be impressive, posting 10 goalie saves and two team saves (Olga Knop and Kelsey Turner) against North Carolina.

*The field hockey team will be helping raise money for Invisible Children, a program that is designed to help with the social problems in Africa, during the Wake Forest game. The team will be selling t-shirts, as well as accepting donations, in an effort to raise money for the cause. Anyone who is interested in helping further can contact assistant coach Chelsea Cipriani (ciprianicl@longwood.edu)
Sunday, Oct. 5 - Longwood at Radford, 3 p.m.
LAST WEEKEND:
Sunday, Sept. 28 - Longwood 1, #5 North Carolina 3
WHO TO WATCH: Team seems to be the Lancers theme this season, with everyone putting in a valiant effort from the players on the field to the players on the bench. Only six members of the team have played and started every game of the season, while every player on the squad has seen playing time. Binnewies continues to be the Lancers go-to-girl to score goals, but sophomore Lauren Van de Kamp appears to be the one dishing out a great majority of the passes. Van de Kamp currently leads the team in assists with five, while freshman Olga Knop is second with four. Senior Carra Bunner has had her fair share of goals this season, sitting in second with four.

QUOTABLE:
Head Coach Iain Byers on last week: We had a tough matchup with North Carolina and pulled out with a decent result. We have to give it to North Carolina, they are a very good team and played very well. For our program, playing a team of such quality only helps to make us better. The girls came out focused and played very well as a team.
Byers on this week: Wake Forest is another very tough game, but physically and mentally. We have to be on our game in both of those areas in order to be successful. It’s again good experience for our team to play the top programs in the country, as it only helps us get better. These games serve to prepare us for the NorPac Tournament, where we are looking to make a great run.
Byers on the team up to this point: The team is coming together nicely. We are taking things from every game we play, whether we win or lose, and applying to the next game. I applaud the efforts of everyone on the team in both playing hard and supporting one another.
