The Fall Sports Season is off to a fast start, both on the field and off.
In early August, the Athletics Department began working on the
Strategic Planning process during our annual retreat. We had a great open forum about establishing our brand within the community and the Division I environment. Following the retreat, we established a committee, which will continue the necessary research and create the final document.
The committee members are, Ken Copeland, Director of the Longwood Real Estate Foundation, Claire LaRoche, Associate Professor of Business Law, Mike Gillian, Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Michelle Meadows, Assistant AD for Compliance/Senior Woman Administrator, Greg Prouty, Assistant AD for Media Relations, Danny Sterling, Assistant AD for Business Operations, and Kathy Riley, Softball Head Coach. I am excited about the different perspectives this group has to offer.
August also saw the grand opening of the ‘Lancer Country’ section in the Farmville area Wal-Mart, a great Lancer Club event in Richmond, and our new online photo store – LancersPhotos.com.
At Wal-Mart, Women’s Soccer Head Coach Todd Dyer, and members of the Women’s Soccer program spent part of the day meeting Longwood fans in the community at the grand opening of
‘Lancer Country’ while also promoting their first game. A record crowd (at the time, 350) for women’s soccer at the Athletics Complex helped lead the team to a 2-0 victory over nearby rival and Big South Conference member Liberty University.
In Richmond, thanks in part to the assistance of Stuart Farmer, parent of junior Women’s Lacrosse student-athlete Page Farmer, the Lancer Club secured the Westwood Country Club in Richmond for the first of the many regional events we will conduct. The attendees were a mix of Longwood alumni, student-athlete parents, and area supporters.
LancersPhotos is our new online photo store linked from our Athletics homepage, longwoodlancers.com. This will be a great opportunity to capture all those Lancers’ Athletic memories. I think you will enjoy the great action shots, and the designs created to accent the photos.
All three events were designed to bring you, our great fans, closer to the Department.
