FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University men's and women's tennis programs were recently named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Teams. In addition to the team accolades, five individuals were recognized as ITA Division I Scholar-Athletes for maintaining at least a 3.5 GPA for the 2011-12 academic year. Senior

Hannah Hill|Portsmouth, Va., sophomore
Malin Allgurin|Värnamo, Sweden and junior
Sarah Moomau|Winchester, Va. represented the Longwood women's program, while junior
Edward Becker|Sydney, Australia represented the men.
This is the first time in head coach
Jakob Gustafsson's tenure at Longwood that his squads have earned the ITA's All-Academic Team honor. Needing to maintain a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.20 to earn the distinction, the Lancer women turned in a strong 3.54 GPA, while the men accumulated a mark of 3.22.
“I am very proud of both of our squads for being named ITA All-Academic Teams,” said Gustafsson. “It is a true reflection of how hard both teams work on and off the court and I am very happy to see they are getting the recognition they deserve. Everyone had to work hard to achieve these awards, but our individual winners Marta, Hannah, Malin, Sarah and Edward were truly outstanding leaders in the classroom for us.”
All five of the Scholar-Athlete award recipients return for the 2012-13 season. In 2011, the women's team turned in an overall mark of 10-10, while the men finished 8-10. The Lancers are scheduled to kick off the new season at the University of Mary Washington's Fall Invitational on September 15-16.
