HANOVER, N.H. - The Longwood University field hockey team defeated Sacred Heart University 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Hanover, New Hampshire. Junior Christina Verhulst|Yorktown (Grafton) scored the match-winning goal in the 47th minute while classmate Rachel Akers|Virginia Beach (First Colonial) added one goal and one assist for the Lancers (2-1) against the Pioneers (1-3). Longwood is back in action on Sunday, September 4, when it faces Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. at 12 p.m..

The action in the first five minutes was fast and furious. The Lancers struck just 3:13 into the match when Rachel Akers inserted the ball on a penalty corner, then crashed the goal and tipped a deflected shot to give Longwood the 1-0 lead. Sacred Heart answered less than one minute later when Sarah Bergman tipped a shot into the cage at 4:09. Verhulst scored the match-winning goal at 46:42 after tipping a shot by senior Olga Knop|Berlin, Germany (Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium). Longwood held Sacred Heart to one shot in the rest of the match to win 2-1.

The Lancers outshot the Pioneers 19-11, including 12-1 in the second half, and had a 13-7 advantage in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) recorded four saves, while Knop and de Grandhomme each attempted a match-high six shots. Sacred Heart goalkeeper Kim Stow allowed two goals with six saves.
