Longwood Drops Pair At Citrus Classic

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Longwood University softball team fell to the University of Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference 16-0 in five innings and the University of Illinois of the Big Ten Conference 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Florida. The Lancers (10-2) return to action on Sunday, March 6, when they face Illinois State University at 9 a.m. on the final day of the Citrus Classic in Orlando.

Against Maryland, the Lancers gave up eight runs on seven hits, all singles, with one walk and one hit batter and one error. Longwood had one baserunner in the first inning when senior Maggie Margadonna|Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) reached on an error, but Kerry Hickey struck out the final two batters to retire the side. The Terrapins added three runs in the top of the third inning on two hits, one walk and one hit batter and scored five runs in the fourth inning on two walks and three hit batters. Senior Tricia Nelson|Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield Central) broke up the no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth with a single. Senior Briana Wells|Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) received the loss while Hickey was credited with the win.

Against Illinois (9-5), the Lancers gave up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, including a three-run home run by Meredith Hackett. The Illini added three runs on two hits in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 6-0. Danielle Zymkowitz tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a single by Hollie Pinchback. Ashley Conrad added a two-run single to complete the scoring in the inning. The Lancers scored one run in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 6-1. Junior Ashley Kramer|Ashburn (Broad Run) reached on an error and came around to score on a RBI single by Nelson. Jessica Davis drove in Pinchback in the bottom of the fifth inning to put Illinois ahead 7-1. Longwood rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore Jordan Cox|Springfield (Robert E. Lee) singled through the left side to start the inning, followed by a walk by junior Courtney Long|Mechanicsville (Hanover). Sophomore Brooke Short|Altavista (Altavista) hit a RBI single to drive in Cox, then senior Nichole Simmons|Chesapeake (Hickory) fouled out to right field and Long scored. Kramer hit a two-RBI triple to drive home the final two runs of the inning and make the final score 7-5.

Wells (8-2, 1.59 ERA) received the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits in six innings. Jackie Guy (4-3) earned the win after giving up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits with six strikeouts in seven innings.
