FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University junior Mark Montgomery|Williamsburg (Bruton) has been selected to play in the 2010 Coastal Plain League (CPL) All-Star Game July 20 at McNair Field in Forest City, North Carolina. The right-handed pitcher has enjoyed great success as a closer this summer for the Edenton (N.C.) Steamers in the wooden bat league. Montgomery, who will play for the National CPL team against the American side, was 1-1 with a 1.61 ERA and 12 saves through July 13 while helping Edenton to a record of 27-12. He has made 20 appearances while pitching 22.1 innings with 41 strikeouts (16.52), limiting opponents to a .082 batting average. Montgomery ranks second in CPL saves, and is tied for second in appearances, games in relief (20), and games finished (17). Mark is the son of Ron and Glenna Montgomery of Williamsburg.

He made 22 appearances for the Lancers while pitching 35.0 innings with 45 strikeouts and only 10 walks, limiting opponents to a .198 batting average. Longwood finished with a final record of 28-20, marking its 29th overall 20-win campaign and 22nd season with at least 25 wins in the program's 33-year history.

The Coastal Plain League bills itself as the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league, and is celebrating its 14th season, featuring 15 teams in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 800 alumni drafted and 36 alums make their Major League debut thus far.
