FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University softball team swept a doubleheader from University at Albany on Friday afternoon, winning the first game 6-5 and the second game 5-0 at Lancer Field in Farmville. Junior
Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) pitched a two-hit shutout in the second game while sophomore
Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run) went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, March 20, when they host in-state foe Norfolk State University at 1 p.m. at Lancer Field in Farmville.
In the first game, Albany scored in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Lancers answered in the bottom of the third inning with six runs. Freshman
Brooke Short/Altavista (Altavista) (3-4, 2 RBI) hit her second triple of the game to score junior
Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) (1-4) and junior
Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) (1-4). Junior
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) (1-2, HR, 2 RBI) followed with a two-run home run. Senior
Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) (2-3) singled, followed by a two-run home run by senior
Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) (1-3, HR, 2 RBI) to put Longwood ahead 6-2 after three innings. Albany scored three runs in the sixth inning and had two runners on base, but junior
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) forced a double play to end the threat.
Wells (15-4) gave up five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits in seven innings. The loss went to Marissa Powell who gave up six runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Albany was led by Gina Mason who went 2-for-3 with one RBI and a double.
In the second game, the Lancers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Kramer (2-2, HR, 2B, 2 RBI) hit a two-run home run to center field. Ketsdever (2-3, HR) added a solo home run in the third inning to put Longwood ahead 3-0. Kramer doubled to start the fourth inning and scored when Nuckols (2-2, RBI) slapped a ball to the shortstop for the infield hit. Short scored the final Longwood run in the fifth inning when she scored on a passed ball to make the score 5-0. The Great Danes left one runner on base every inning.
Spencer (1-3) allowed only two hits and two walks in seven innings in the shutout win.
Leah McIntosh (1-1) received the loss after giving up five runs, three of them earned, on six hits and four walks. Mason (1-3) got one of the two hits for the Great Danes.
