LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Longwood University women's cross country scored 1,026 points to finish 33rd among 35 teams at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by the University of Louisville Saturday afternoon at the E. P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. Duke University took first place with its 69 points in the 6K race, while Catherine White of the University of Virginia won the individual race with her time of 20:03. The Lancers were led by senior
Laura Bland/Las Vegas, Nev. (Palo Verde) with her time of 23:54 to place 181st among the 237 runners. Longwood completed its 2009 campaign with the regional competition.
Bland was followed by sophomore
Jessica Alley/New Castle (Craig County) (24:54, 211th), senior
Jacquelyne Chantry/Williamsburg (Lafayette) (25:05, 213th), along with freshmen
Megan Short/Erial, N.J. (Timber Creek) (25:35, 222nd) and
Jenna Sprinkle/Buchanan (James River) (25:35, 223rd). Also running was junior
Lauren Kuhns/Fredericksburg (Riverbend) (27:42, 237th).
"This was our first year in the Southeast Region,” explained third-year head coach
Catherine Hanson. “Longwood had previously been placed in the Mid-Atlantic, which is a smaller region and a lot less competitive. The Southeast includes schools such as Kentucky, Duke, William and Mary, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Clemson. My goal in going to the regional is to give my runners a chance to run against some of the nation's top runners while representing Longwood University as an up and coming Division I program. There are schools within that region that we were competitive against and we proved that by not finishing last this year in a region that is a lot more challenging."
