Results
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Longwood University men's tennis team continued a strong fall season, participating in the Mary Washington Kickoff on September 19-20. The Lancers, along with host Mary Washington, competed against teams from George Mason, Liberty and Richmond.
Junior
Billy Heird/York, Pa. (Dallastown) had the tournament of his career, going undefeated in both singles and doubles competition. Heird (3-0 singles) began the kickoff with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Dylan Schrode of Richmond, before going on to knock of Kaz Murata of Richmond with ease, taking him down in straight sets (6-1, 6-0). The last obstacle in Heirds way was Louis Steyn of Liberty, who refused to go down easy forcing Heird to kick it up a notch to take the match 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).

David Cardoso/Porto, Portugal (Externato Lumen) went a perfect 3-0. First up for the dynamic duo were Brian Fitzgerald/Jorge Osuna of George Mason, who were unable to take the game from the Lancers, falling 8-2. Cardoso and Heird then went on to defeat Clay Cypert/Giancarlo Lemmi of Liberty, 8-5, before taking out Randy Loden/Murata of Mary Washington 8-2.
Singles went nearly as well for Cardoso who finished the Kickoff 2-1. Cardoso opened up with a lost to Louis Steyn of LIberty (6-3, 6-3), but bounced back against Jason Dunn of Mary Washington, taking the match after three sets (2-6, 6-4, 6-1). Cardoso capped off his tournament with a victory over Evan Goff of host Mary Washington, 6-4, 6-4.
Senior
Brandon Lindsley/Woodbridge (Woodbridge) had a spectacular showing in singles, coming out of the Kickoff with an undefeated record. Lindsley started things by easily taking out Lemmi (Liberty) in straight sets (6-1, 6-2), before knocking off Loden (MW) just as quickly, winning 6-2, 6-0. The perfect record was complete, when Lindsley defeated Osuna (GM) in straight sets, taking the game 7-5, 6-1.

Carlos Garcia de Andoain/Madrid, Spain (Liceo Sorolla 'C') put in a 2-1 performance, after dropping their opening game 9-7 to Minter/Schrode of Richmond. The duo bounced back to take their next two games, starting with a win over Chad Simpson/Steyn of Liberty (8-4). The pair then defeated Evan Goff/Bryce Parrish of Mary Washington with ease, taking the match 8-2.
In singles Garcia de Andoain had the same kind of luck, getting two out of three decisions to go his way. The 5-10 junior started things off with a victory over Cypert, 6-3, 6-1, but was not able to get past John James (MW) dropping the match in straight sets (7-6, 7-5). Garcia de Andoain bounced back to take his final game from Brian Fitzgerald of George Mason, 6-4, 6-3.
Also going undefeated in singles this weekend was sophomore Milo Barjas-Alexander/Arlington (Bishop O'Connell). Barajas-Alexander started the Kickoff with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lee Wexler of George Mason, before battling tough against Mary Washington's Andrew Frisk. The pair duked it out, with Barajas-Alexander getting the better of Frisk, taking the game 6-4, 2-6, 1-0( 10-6). Barajas-Alexander completed his undefeated streak against Chester Murray of Richmond, taking him out 6-0, 6-2.

Nobu Tanaka/Potomac, Md. (St. Johns College HS), who ended the weekend 1-2. Things started off on the wrong foot, with the duo falling to Feeley/Rafa Arana of Richmond in a close match (9-8). The pair bounced back to defeat Daniel Schneider/Wexler of George Mason in another close battle (8-6), before falling to James/Dunn of Mary Washington 8-2.
Individually Tanaka had a stellar freshman performance, going a perfect 3-0. Tanaka kicked things off with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win over Simpson, before wearing out Riley Baver of Mary Washington who retired in the third set (3-6, 6-2, 4-4 ret.). Tanaka had no problem taking out Frisk, easily winning his third game 6-4, 6-0.
Junior
Andres Lazarte/Lima, Peru (Santa Rosa) had a good tournament, finishing the Kickoff with a 2-1 record. Lazarte got to work by first knocking off Goff with ease, taking the game 6-0, 6-1. The second matchup would prove to be tougher, with Lazarte falling to Steyn, 7-5, 6-3. The 5-9 junior bounced back in his final game to take out Arana of Richmond 6-2, 7-6.

Austin Brawley/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) had a tough time, falling to 1-2 in the tournament. The pair opened with a easy victory over Nelson/Murray (8-3), but then ran into a road block against Vaughn/Lipstock, dropping a close match (8-6). The duo's final matchup was just has hard fought, but they were unable to pull out a win against Frisk/Baver, falling 8-5.
Brawley's luck didn't get any better in singles, as the 5-10 senior posted a 1-2 overall record. Brawley opened things with a victory over Schneider, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Parrish of Mary Washington would hand Brawley a 6-2, 6-0 loss in the second game. Brawley went on to drop his third game of the Kickoff with a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Simpson of Liberty.
