COMPLETE RESULTS
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University men's tennis team competed in the 2008 UVA Invitational on September 12-14. The Lancers were able to pick up a couple of wins over players who are on nationally ranked teams. Longwood returns to the courts for more fall competition on September 19-21 participating in the Mary Washington Fall Kickoff in Fredericksburg.
Billy Heard/York, Pa. (Dallastown) finished the invitational 3-1 overall in singles, advancing to the semi-final round. Heard began the invitational with a win in Flight D defeating Leif Sunderland (Virginia) who took an early set from Heird (4-6, 6-4, 6-2). Heird would then go on to defeat Ben Worth (William and Mary) 6-7, 6-1, 6-3, before taking down Tommi Nissinen (JMU) in two straight sets in the quarterfinal (6-3, 7-6). Gilbert Wong (Binghamton) got the better of Heird in the semi-finals, winning 7-5, 6-2.
Also in Flight D was
David Cardoso/Porto, Portugal (Externato Lumen) who ended the invitational with a 2-1 record. Cardoso dropped his first game of the invite, falling to Darren NG (Binghampton) in straight sets (6-2, 6-2), but pulled out a win in the Consolation D semi-final. In the semi-final Cardoso defeated Adam Gross (Georgetown) in style, winning 6-2, 6-0 which allowed him to advance to the Consolation D Final. In the final he defeated Preston Lemon (Virginia Tech) 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).
Brandon Lindsley/Woodbridge (Woodbridge) ended the invitational with a 1-1 record, winning his first game of Flight C, but falling in the second. In the first game Lindsley won 6-2, 7-5 over Scott Myers (Davidson), advancing to take on Mike Smith (JMU) where he fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Carlos Garcia de Andoain/Madrid, Spain (Liceo Sorolla 'C') dropped both of his matches (0-2) after starting out Flight A1 against Drew Courtney (Virginia) 6-2, 6-4. In the Consolation A1, Garcia de Andoain faced off against #67 David Bendheim (Nebraska) falling in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).
In doubles action Lindsley/Garcia de Andoain put in a good showing in Flight C, advancing to the finals. The duo defeated Renato Melo/Brandon Videtich (Nebraska) in the first round of Flight C, 8-6. In the semi-final round the pair knocked off Tommi Nissinen/Ville Maaranen (JMU) 8-4, advancing them to the final. In the final Lindsley/Garcia de Andoain were unable to squeeze past Yan Levinski/Chris Kushma (George Washington) falling 8-1.
Heird/Cardoso (1-2) fell in their opening game of Flight B, losing to William Lang/Ilja Orre (Willam and Mary) 8-5. The pair pulled out a victory in the consolation round, defeating Sunderland/Arie Hefter (Virgina/Davidson) 8-4, before falling in the consolation semi-final to Patrick Daciek/Zack Pine (Virginia Tech) 8-2.
