Baltimore, Md.-- The Longwood University field hockey team earned its third consecutive win Friday afternoon, handing the UMBC Retrievers a 4-2 loss in Baltimore. The win puts the Lancers at 4-4 on the season, while UMBC falls to 1-6. Longwood will return to action Saturday September 23, taking on Rider for a 1 p.m. match-up.
In a six goal first half, the Lancers got going early offensively putting three quick goals up on the board in the first ten minutes of the match. Sophomore Carra Bunner/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) tallied the first goal of the game 5:17 in on a give and go from freshman Julia Hernandez/Norfolk (Maury) for the early lead. The Lancer’s padded their lead to two goals at the 8:39 mark on a penalty corner. Stick stopper Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) flipped the ball left to freshman Kelsey Turner/Virginia Beach (Tallwood), who fired a hard low shot to the left corner past UMBC’s keeper for the 2-0 lead.
Senior Katy Lernihan/Fredericksburg (Chancellor) tallied her third goal of the season, taking a pass from Newbold and putting it in the lower left corner, extending Longwood’s lead to three goals with 24:53 to go in the opening half. UMBC cut the deficit to one goal 2:05 later, scoring on a penalty corner from Kate Garnet.
Newbold put the Lancers back up by three goals at the 19:07 mark, after taking a pass from Hernandez right outside the circle, pulling the UMBC goalie off her line, and sliding a shot under the charging goalie for the 4-1 lead. UMBC converted its second penalty corner of the match with 7:38 to go in the half. The two squads played the final 35 minutes without any goals tallied giving Longwood the 4-2 win.
Junior Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) anchored the defense making three saves in 70:00 of work in goal.
“We had a great start today,” stated head coach Nancy Joel. “Getting three goals in the opening ten minutes really set the tone. We had17 girls play today, so we got a chance to rest our legs for tomorrow’s game with Rider.”
The Lancers held a 12-8 edge in shots, while UMBC finished with a 6-5 advantage in corners.
