FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University rallied from a 3-0 deficit with five runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-4 collegiate baseball victory past visiting Radford University of the Big South Conference Tuesday afternoon at Lancer Stadium. The Lancers improved their record to 21-23, while the Highlanders dropped to 7-35 overall. Longwood will play again Wednesday, May 10, at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina beginning at 3 p.m..
Against Radford, Longwood fell behind early as the Highlanders scored an unearned run in the first inning and two more runs, one unearned, in the fifth inning. The Lancers finally crossed the plate in the fifth to close to within 3-1 before scoring five runs in the decisive seventh inning to lead 6-3. The visitors added a run in the ninth inning for the final two-run margin of victory for the hosts.
In the fifth, freshman Brandon Maupin/Woodbridge (Potomac) (3-4) singled with one out and advanced to second on a ground ball before junior Ryan Rowe/Richmond (Varina) (1-3, RBI) came up with the clutch two-out RBI single to left field.
In the seventh, LU plated the five runs on three hits, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly along with the aid of an error, a wild pitch, and two walks. Maupin opened the frame with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Freshman Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (0-0) pinch ran and later scored on a one-out double to left center field by classmate Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-3, RBI). Junior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-3), who had walked, crossed the plate on the fielding error that allowed redshirt sophomore captain Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (0-4, RBI) to reach base. A sac fly from freshman Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (0-2, RBI) scored Heidler, and junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-2) scored from third when Zigrang was caught in a rundown between first and second base after walking earlier in the inning as well.
Junior captain Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (6-3, 3.24 ERA) earned the mound win with the first 8.0 innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run with four strikeouts. Classmate Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (2) registered his second save with the final 1.0 inning, yielding two hits and one earned run.
Radford was led by Jonathan Spears (2-3, RBI) with two hits, including an infield RBI single in the first inning. Josh Hammonds (1-3) took the pitching loss in relief with just a third of an inning, allowing two hits and two earned runs.
