BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 6-4 season-ending college baseball decision at the College of William and Mary Wednesday night in Williamsburg. The host Tribe improved to 21-28 overall while rallying from a 4-1 deficit, scoring three runs in the eighth inning, en route to defeating the visiting Lancers. Longwood finished its second campaign against a complete NCAA Division I schedule with a final record of 23-27, establishing the 25th 20-win season in the 28-year history of the program.
Longwood trailed just 1-0 through five innings before scoring four runs in the sixth inning to lead 4-1. William and Mary closed to within 4-3 with two runs in the seventh inning before plating three runs in the decisive eighth inning while claiming the victory and two-game sweep of the Lancers.
In the sixth, freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-3) walked with one-out, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single from junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-5, RBI). Childress crossed the plate ahead of redshirt sophomore captain Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (2-4, 2 RBI) who followed with a two-run home run down the left field line, his team-best seventh homer this year. Freshman Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-4) reached on a fielding error, and later scored via another wild pitch complicated further by a throwing error.
William and Mary scored the early run in the fourth with two hits, including an RBI single by Bryan Morosky (1-3, RBI). The Tribe added two runs in the seventh on just one hit, a clutch two-out, two-run home run from Paul Juliano (1-3, 2 RBI). In the eighth, W&M plated three runs on four hits, including an RBI single by Greg Sexton (2-4, RBI), an RBI double by Greg Maliniak (3-4, RBI), and a sacrifice fly from James Williamson (0-3, RBI).
Junior Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (6-5) took the pitching loss in relief for Longwood with the final 1.0 inning, allowing three hits and two earned runs. Sophomore John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) had started on the mound for the Lancers and pitched the first 7.0-plus innings, scattering seven hits and four earned runs with three strikeouts.
Joe Roenker (1-3) got the pitching win in relief for William and Mary while tossing the final 2.0 shutout innings, yielding two hits with three strikeouts.
Longwood could return its entire team for next season as the Lancers had no seniors among their 23-player roster. LU lost 10 games this year by either one or two-run deficits.
