FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a collegiate baseball doubleheader against visiting Delaware State University Friday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning 3-0 in the first game before falling 7-2 in the second game. The Lancers are now 22-25, while the Hornets are now 16-33-2. Longwood and Delaware State will play the three-game series finale on Saturday, May 13, at Lancer Stadium beginning at 1 p.m..
In the opener against DSU, Longwood sophomore John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (3-3) earned his first career complete-game shutout with an impressive five-hit effort. The right-hander scattered five singles while striking out six with only one walk over the 9.0 innings.
Longwood scored the only run it would need in the first inning as junior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-3) singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a ground ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly by classmate Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (0-2, RBI). The Lancers added a run in the fifth when freshman Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (0-2) walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and later scored unearned on a throwing error. LU pushed across a third run in the seventh as junior Ryan Rowe/Richmond (Varina) (2-3) reached on a one-out single, stole second, advanced to third on a fly ball, and scored on an RBI single from freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-3, RBI).
Farrell took care of the rest while posting his first career complete game and shutout, lowering his season ERA to 3.25 through 44.1 innings. In addition to Rowe’s two hits, redshirt sophomore captain Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (2-4) and sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-4) also collected two hits each for the hosts.
Delaware State was led by Brandon Gravely (2-4) with two hits, while Nick Bitter (5-7) took the mound loss with a complete game as well, allowing eight hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts over 8.0 innings.
In the nightcap, DSU scored three runs in the second inning en route to avoiding a sweep of the twinbill. Gravely (2-4, RBI) led the Hornets with two hits again, including his 12th home run to lead-off the second. Alex Carter (1-3, 2 RBI) added a two-run homer in the second as well, while C.J. Acker (2-4, RBI) also collected two hits for the visitors. Billy Keyes (5-8) got the complete-game pitching win, limiting the Lancers to just four hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts over the 7.0 innings.
Longwood prevented a shutout with runs in the fifth and seventh innings. In the fifth, von Gersdorff (2-3) led-off with a bunt single to the mound and advanced to second on a throwing error. He went to third on a ground ball, and scored on another ground-ball out by Quigley (0-3, RBI). In the seventh, von Gersdorff again led-off with a single and later scored on an RBI grounder from Ames (0-2, RBI).
Junior Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (6-4) took the mound loss with the first 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts. Redshirt junior Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) finished the game for the Lancers, scattering three hits over the final 2.0 scoreless innings.
