Baseball Falls At Norfolk State 9-5

NORFOLK, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 9-5 collegiate baseball decision at Norfolk State University Thursday night in Norfolk.  The Lancers are now 18-17, while the Spartans improved to 15-16 overall.  Longwood will play again next Tuesday, April 11, at George Mason University in Fairfax beginning at 3 p.m..
    
Longwood and Norfolk State each scored runs in the first inning before the Lancers added two runs in the second, and another run in the third to lead 4-1.  The Spartans, however, tallied four runs in the third to lead 5-4 and added a run in the fourth inning to lead 6-4.  LU climbed to within 6-5 with a run in the seventh inning but NSU scored three runs in the eighth inning to secure the victory.
    
In the first, redshirt sophomore Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (3-5, 2 RBI) had a one-out single to drive home junior Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-4) who had opened the game with a single.  In the second, junior Ryan Rowe/Richmond (Varina) (1-3, RBI) singled to score sophomore Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-4) who had also singled, and Rowe scored later in the inning as another Lancer was in a run-down between first and second base.
    
In the third, Zigrang led-off with his team-leading fourth home run this season to right field.  In the seventh, freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (0-3) walked to open the frame, stole second base, moved to third on a ground-out, and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-3, RBI).
    
Norfolk State was led offensively by John Boyd (2-3, 2 RBI), Moriba George (2-2, RBI), Charles LeLane (2-4), and Rocco Savage (2-5) with two hits each.  The Spartans outhit LU 12-7 and was aided by seven Lancer errors.
   
Junior Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) (3-4) took the pitching loss with the first 2.2 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts.
