GAME 2 BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a collegiate baseball doubleheader against visiting North Carolina A&T Sunday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning 5-4 in the first game before falling 2-1 in the second game. The Lancers are now 19-22, while the Aggies are now 16-28. Longwood will play again on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 25-26, a two-game series at West Virginia University of the Big East Conference in Morgantown, West Virginia.
In the opener against NCAT, Longwood scored four runs in the fourth inning before adding the decisive run in the eighth inning for the one-run victory. In the eighth, junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-3) doubled to right center field to open the frame and advanced to third on a two-out throwing error. Childress scored what proved to be the game-winning run on another two-out throwing error.
In the fourth, the Lancers scored four runs on four hits as redshirt sophomore captain Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (1-4) led-off with a single, followed by a walk to Childress, and another single from freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (3-4) to load the bases. Freshman Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-3, 2 RBI) promptly hit a clutch two-run double down the left field line to score Zigrang and Childress. Classmate Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-2, RBI) added an RBI single to score Heidler. Quigley crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice ground ball by junior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (0-4, RBI) to give the hosts a 4-2 advantage.
Junior Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (6-3) earned the pitching win with the first 5.0-plus innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts. Junior captain Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (1) got the save with the final 1.0 inning, yielding three hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.
NCAT had scored two runs in the fourth on two hits, a throwing error, a passed ball, and a wild pitch. The Aggies added a run in the sixth inning behind three hits, and closed to within 5-4 in the ninth inning with another run on three hits. The visitors were led by Neil Rosser (3-4) with three hits, while Michael Hauff (4-4) took the mound loss with the first 7.0-plus innings, scattering seven hits and four earned runs with 11 strikeouts.
In the nightcap, NCAT scored runs in both the second and sixth innings while avoiding the sweep of the twinbill. Raul Santiago (3-4, RBI) led the Aggies with three hits, including an RBI single in the sixth, while Nick Mayo (2-5, RBI) added an RBI single in the second. John Primus (4-5) got the complete-game pitching win, limiting the Lancers to just three hits and one unearned run with eight strikeouts.
Longwood made it interesting with a run in the ninth inning as sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (0-3) reached on an error and later scored on a ground-ball out from Heidler (0-4, RBI). Unfortunately, the Lancers stranded the tying run at third base.
Sophomore John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (2-3) took the hard-luck mound loss with the first 8.0-plus innings, allowing 11 hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts.
