LEXINGTON, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 10-3 collegiate baseball decision at VMI Wednesday in Lexington. The Lancers are now 11-9 this season, while VMI improved to 12-4. Longwood will play again this weekend, March 11-12, at Samford University of the Ohio Valley Conference in Birmingham, Alabama for a three-game weekend series.
At VMI, Longwood scored a run in the first inning for an early 1-0 advantage before the Keydets scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control. The Lancers added two runs in the fourth inning to close to within 7-3 but the hosts scored two more runs in the sixth, and one more run in the eighth inning while out-hitting the visitors 16-9 en route to the home win.
Longwood was led offensively by junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-4, RBI) with two hits, both doubles, including a run scoring double in the first inning to score freshman Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-5). Bailey had singled and stole second base for his team-best eighth steal this season. Freshman Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-4, RBI) had an RBI single in the fourth inning to score classmate David Loel/Frankfort, Ohio (Frankfort Adena) (1-3). Loel had walked before stealing second base, his third stolen base this season, and Quigley later scored on a passed ball.
Freshman Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-3) took the pitching loss with the first 1.0 inning, allowing five hits and four earned runs with one strikeout. Junior Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) pitched the final 3.1 innings, scattering three hits with one earned run and one strikeout.
VMI was led by B.T. Good (3-5, 3 RBI) with three hits and three RBI, while Jacoby Fields (3-5, RBI) also had three hits with an RBI as well. Trey Barham (3-1) earned the mound win with the first 2.0 innings, yielding three hits and one earned run with three strikeouts.
