Baseball Falls At Campbell 14-8

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 14-8 collegiate baseball decision at Campbell University of the Atlantic Sun Conference Wednesday night in North Carolina.  The Lancers saw their record evened at 14-14 as the Camels rallied from a 7-2 deficit while improving to 7-14 overall.  Longwood and Campbell will play again next Tuesday, March 28, at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 2:30 p.m..
    
At Campbell, Longwood scored four runs in the third inning, and three more runs in the fourth inning to lead 7-2 through four innings.  The Camels, however, scored two runs in the fifth inning, and three more runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 7-7 through six innings.  The Lancers went back ahead 8-7 with a run in the seventh inning, but the hosts scored six runs in the seventh, and another run in the eighth for the win.
    
In the third, freshman Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-5, RBI) led-off the inning with a solo home run, his second of the season.  Junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-5, RBI) added a one-out RBI single to score freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (2-5, 2 RBI) who had reached on an infield single.  Sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (0-4, RBI) drove home redshirt sophomore captain Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (2-5) with an RBI ground-out as Zigrang had reached earlier on an error.
    
In the fourth, freshman Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-3) had a two-out triple and scored on an RBI double by junior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-4, RBI).  Ames scored ahead of Heidler who followed with his first collegiate home run, a two-out, two-run blast for the 7-2 lead.  Freshman Brandon Maupin/Woodbridge (Potomac) (2-4, RBI) added an RBI single in the seventh to score Childress who had reached on a fielder’s choice.  Freshman David Loel/Frankfort, Ohio (Frankfort Adena) (2-4) also had two hits for the Lancers.
    
Freshman John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (0-1) took the pitching loss with 1.1 innings of relief, allowing four hits and three earned runs.  Junior Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) had went the first 5.1 innings, yielding 13 hits and five earned runs with one strikeout.
    
Campbell was led offensively by last week’s A-Sun player of the week, Mike Priest, (5-5, 3 RBI) with five hits and three RBI, including a double, stolen base, and a sacrifice fly.  The decisive six-run seventh inning included five hits, though aided by three Longwood errors (two fielding, one throwing).
