FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 5-2 collegiate baseball victory past the University of Dayton of the Atlantic 10 Conference Sunday afternoon at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers earned their second win in three games against the Flyers while improving their record to 14-13 as Dayton dropped to 8-9 overall. Longwood will play again on Tuesday, March 21, hosting James Madison University (JMU POSTPONED) in Farmville at Lancer Stadium beginning at 2:30 p.m..
Longwood scored first in the decisive game of the weekend series with three runs in the second inning to lead 3-0. Dayton came right back with two runs in the third inning for a 3-2 game. The Lancers, however, secured the series edge with two more runs in the third inning for the three-run triumph.
In the second, junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-3) led-off with a double and later scored on a UD throwing error. Freshman David Loel/Frankfort, Ohio (Frankfort Adena) (1-2, RBI) followed with a single to center field to score sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-4, 2 RBI) who had reached on the error. Freshman Brandon Maupin/Woodbridge (Potomac) (1-3, RBI) added a one-out RBI double to center field scoring Loel.
In the third, freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-4) opened with a lead-off single to right field, stole second base, and scored ahead of von Gersdorff who hit his first home run of the season, a two-out shot to left field.
Sophomore John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (2-1) earned the pitching win with the first 5.1 innings on the mound, scattering five hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Redshirt junior Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) got the save, his team-best fourth this season, with the final 3.2 scoreless innings, yielding just two hits with six strikeouts.
Dayton was led offensively by Bobby Getty (3-4, 2 RBI) with three hits and two RBI. Chris Rubio (1-3) took the pitching loss with the first 3.0 innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs with two strikeouts.
