FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University defeated Norfolk State University 15-4 Wednesday afternoon in collegiate baseball at Lancer Stadium. The Lancers (2-2) were led by redshirt sophomore Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) who was 2-4 with four RBI, including a double in the home opener, while freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (3-5, RBI) collected three hits, including a triple. Longwood will play again this weekend, Feb. 10-12, hosting VCU for a three-game series beginning Friday (Feb. 10) at 2 p.m. in Farmville.
Against Norfolk State, Longwood scored two runs in both the first and second innings, adding four runs in the third, five runs in the fifth, and two more runs in the eighth inning. Norfolk State managed two runs in the third inning, and one each in the fourth and sixth innings. The Lancers out-hit the Spartans 12-7, while NSU committed five errors and LU had three miscues on the afternoon.
Zigrang drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning, adding a two-run single in the fifth and an RBI double in the eighth. Heidler had an RBI single in the fifth inning and later tripled to lead-off the eighth and scored on Zigrang’s double. Sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-4, 3 RBI) had a two-run triple in the second inning, adding an RBI single in the fifth, while junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-2, 2 RBI) contributed a two-run single in the third inning. Freshman Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-1) earned the pitching win with the first 2.0 shutout innings, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts as LU used seven different pitchers.
Longwood and VCU of the Colonial Athletic Association will play at 2 p.m. Friday, followed by 1 p.m. start times on both Saturday and Sunday. The Lancers will travel to Lynchburg to play Liberty University of the Big South Conference next Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 2:30 p.m..
