FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a collegiate baseball doubleheader past visiting Saint Peter’s College Sunday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning both games by identical scores of 6-0. The Lancers improved to 5-4 with the two-game sweep, while the Peacocks dropped to 0-2 in their season-opening games. Longwood will play again on Tuesday, Feb. 21, hosting Liberty University of the Big South Conference at Lancer Stadium beginning at 2:30 p.m..
In the opener against Saint Peter’s, Longwood scored four runs in the third inning before adding two runs in the sixth inning for the home shutout. In the third, junior Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-3, 3 RBI) delivered the key hit, a bases-loaded triple to score three runs. In the sixth, sophomore Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-2, RBI) had an RBI single for the Lancers. Junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-3) led the LU attack with two hits, including a double. Sophomore John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (1-1) earned the pitching win with the first 6.1 innings, scattering three hits with three strikeouts.
Wayne Guarino (1-3), Andrew Costello (1-3), and Mike McGuire (1-2) each had a hit for Saint Peter’s, while Ben Gallo (0-1) took the mound loss with the first 4.0 innings, yielding three hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Longwood scored two runs in each of the second, third, and fifth innings en route to its second-straight shutout and sweep of the twinbill. Lydon (1-1, 2 RBI) had a two-run single in the second before sophomore Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (3-4, RBI) delivered an RBI double in the third, later scoring on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (0-2, 2 RBI). In the fifth, Zigrang doubled again and was plated, once-again, on a sac fly from von Gersdorff. Sophomore Brian Polgar/Strongsville, Ohio (St, Ignatius) (1-1, RBI) added a pinch-hit RBI single later in the inning to close-out the scoring. Junior Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (2-1) earned the pitching win with the complete-game shutout, scattering four hits with five strikeouts.
Dennis Alexander (2-3) had two hits for the Peacocks, while Frank Pacifico (1-3) and Paul Schulman (1-2) each had a hit. Santo Maertz (0-1) took the mound loss with the first 4.0 innings, yielding three hits and six earned runs with four strikeouts.
