ORLANDO, Fla. – Longwood University softball split two games on the opening day of the Central Florida Tournament Friday in Orlando, Fla. The Lancers, who now hold a 1-3 record on the season, earned their first victory of the 2005 campaign with a 8-3 victory over Boston University. LU then fell to host Central Florida 9-0 in five innings. Longwood will be back in action tomorrow, February 19, when they face off against North Dakota State at 9:00 a.m. Bracket play will then begin either at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m.
Against Boston University, Longwood scored three runs in the first inning and was able to push its advantage to 7-0 after three and a half innings of play. Boston University broke up the Lancers shutout in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring one run. The Terriers also notched a run in the fifth and sixth inning, but the Lancers held on for the impressive 8-3 victory.
In its second game of the day, Longwood struggled from the plate, only able to muster two hits off of Golden Knight pitcher Kelly McIntyre. Junior Becca Walker/Gainesville (Stonewall Jackson) and sophomore Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) accounted for the Lancer hits. Central Florida scored four runs in the first, three in the second and two in the third to claim the shutout victory.
