FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University scored 13 runs off 11 hits in just four innings to shutout Mountain State, 13-0, Saturday afternoon at Lancer Field. Junior Ashley Hawkins/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) paced the 13-run attack with her 2-for-3 performance, including her first home run of the season, while tying her career-high three RBI. The Lancers will return to action next weekend, March 9-10, as they travel to nearby Salem to participate in a tournament hosted by West Virginia Wesleyan.
Against Mountain State, sophomore Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange Co.) got the Lancers on the board with its first two runs of the game, hitting back-to-back RBI-doubles. Washington hit her first double in the bottom of the first up the middle, scoring freshman Abbey Welch/LaPlata, Md. (McDonough), before hitting her second double to centerfield in the bottom of the third, allowing classmate Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) to cross the plate, giving the Lancers a 2-0 advantage over the visiting Cougars.
Longwood continued to dominate Mountain State in the fourth frame, scoring 11 of its 13 runs. Hawkins sparked the scoring spree, getting a hit in both at-bats, including her two-run homerun. Her first hit, an RBI-single to left field, scored classmate Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) for the first run of the inning, while her first homer in a Lancer uniform, scored the final two runs of the frame, as she drove home freshman Courtney “Pepper” Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) giving Longwood the decisive home win.
In addition to Hawkins, Washington and Steele were both perfect at the plate, as Washington went 3-for-3, including a career-high five RBI, while Steele went 2-for-2. Steele (14-7) earned the win, throwing a complete-game (5.0 IP), two-hit shutout, with six strikeouts.
