Game #2 BOX SCORE
AUSTIN, Texas – Longwood swept a collegiate softball doubleheader from Saint Edward’s Tuesday afternoon in Austin, Texas, winning the first game 7-2 before shutting out the host school 1-0 in the nightcap. The Lancers have now won three-straight and are 14-8 on the season. Longwood will return to action Thursday, March 11 as the squad travels back to San Antonio to face Emporia State as part of the Alamo Classic hosted by Incarnate Word.
In the opener at Saint Edward’s, Longwood quickly got on the board, notching four runs in the top frame of the second inning to take a 4-0 advantage over the Hilltoppers. The host school answered with two runs of their own in the fourth inning to pull within two runs (4-2), but the visiting Lancers proved to be too much after adding three more runs in the fifth for the road victory.
Junior Megan Camden/Bedford (Liberty) paced the Lancers at the plate, getting three hits in five at-bats with four RBI. Junior Ashley Hawkins/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) and freshman Abbey Welch/LaPlata, Md. (McDonough) each were perfect at-bat, going 2-for-2, respectively, while senior Heather Williams/Brookneal (Appomattox) provided the Lancers with a solid 2-for-4 performance. Junior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) (7-4) earned the win, throwing seven innings.
In the nightcap, the two teams remained scoreless through seven-complete innings, forcing the game to be stretched into an eighth frame, before the Lancers notched what proved to be the game-winning run off an RBI-single from Steele. Steele finished the outing with two hits in three appearances at the plate, while sophomore Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange Co.) aided the Lancer offense, going 3-for-4. Welch (7-3) got the win, after going the distance on the mound.
