Game #2 BOX SCORE

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Longwood split a collegiate softball doubleheader at Incarnate Word Monday evening in San Antonio, Texas, shutting out the host school 1-0 in the nightcap after falling 6-4 in the opener.  The Lancers are now 12-8 on the season, while the Crusaders are 13-11 overall.  Head Coach Kathy Riley’s squad is scheduled to return to action this afternoon as the Lancers travel to Austin to take on Saint Edward’s at 3 p.m.

At Incarnate Word in the second game, Longwood scored the one and only run of the game in the top frame of the first inning, as sophomore Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange Co.) reached base on an error by the shortstop, allowing junior Megan Camden/Bedford (Liberty) to cross the plate after reaching base on a single.  The two teams remained scoreless for the rest of the game, as the Lancers claimed the road victory.

Washington and Camden got the only two hits for the Lancers, going 1-for-3 at the plate.  Freshman pitcher Abbey Welch/LaPlata, Md. (McDonough) (6-3), who pitched 12 out of 13 innings in the series, earned the win, throwing seven complete innings with three strikeouts.

In the first game, the Crusaders got on the board first, posting one run in the bottom of the second inning and again in the fourth frame with another run.  The Lancers responded in the top of the six, crossing the plate four times to take the 4-2 advantage, but the host school proved to be too much for Longwood as they retaliated with four runs of their own in the same inning to get the win.

Senior Heather Williams/Brookneal (Appomattox) paced the Lancers, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one RBI.  Junior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) also got one hit in two at-bats with two RBI, while Camden, junior Alishia Stewart/Faber (Nelson Co.), and sophomore Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan), along with freshman Courtney “Pepper” Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) each got a hit of their own.  Welch (5-3) took the loss after throwing five innings, allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts.
