GAME #2 BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University shutout Indiana (Pa.) 1-0, 8-0 to complete the sweep of the collegiate softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Lancer Field. The back-to-back victories improve the Lancers to 11-7 on the season, while the visiting Indians, who opened their 2004 season today, are now 0-2. Head Coach Kathy Riley’s squad will return to action Monday, March 8 as they travel to Texas to take on Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
Against IUP in the opener, the two teams remained evenly match throughout five complete innings, keeping the game scoreless until senior Heather Williams/Brookneal (Appomattox) hit the game-winning ground-ruled double to centerfield in the sixth inning to Longwood all the runs it would need. The third baseman drove a two-out shot to deep centerfield that dropped before going over the 220-foot deep fence, bringing home sophomore Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan), who previously reached base on a single, securing the home triumph.
Williams led the Lancers during the first contest, getting two hits in three at-bats, including her double and the game’s only RBI, while Gordon and junior Alishia Stewart/Faber (Nelson Co.) each went 1-for-2 in the outing. Sophomore pitcher Abbey Welch/LaPlata, Md. (McDonough) (5-2) earned the win, throwing her seventh complete-game of the season (7.0 IP) with nine strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Longwood tallied seven runs in the second inning, including two home runs to complete the doubleheader sweep of Indiana in just five short innings. The Lancers opened up strong in the second frame, getting four hits, including two home runs and two singles. Williams drove the first homer of the inning – her second on the season – a two-run shot to left field, bringing in sophomore Tori Flint/Charlottesville (Albemarle). Sophomore Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange Co.) got the second homer of the frame, driving a two-out two-run shot to deep centerfield, allowing Gordon to cross the plate. Longwood added another run in the third inning, as the Lancers claimed their second-straight win.
Williams again led the Lancers for the second time of the afternoon, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs and two RBI. Junior Ashley Hawkins/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) also posted a perfect 1-for-1 performance at the plate, including a run scored, while sophomore Julie Oakes/Stafford (North Stafford) registered a hit in two at-bats. Junior pitcher Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) (6-4) got the win, throwing her seventh complete-game of the season (5.0 IP), while limiting the Indians to just one hit.
