SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Longwood University defeated Valdosta State for the second time of the Spartanburg Softball Tournament, picking up an 11-4 win over the Blazers Sunday morning in South Carolina. With the victory, the Lancers improve to 20-10 on the season and advance to the semifinal round of the event as they face the sixth-seeded Lander.
Against #7 Valdosta State, Longwood scored three runs in the second, four in the third, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth as it easily defeated the Blazers for the second time of the tournament. Sophomore Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) paced the Lancers, getting two hits in four at-bats, including a three run-homer, a double, and four RBI, while Steele went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer and three RBI. Freshman Abbey Welch/LaPlate, Md. (McDonough) (11-4) earned the win on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings with four strikeouts.
