Softball Defeats Texas A&M Kingsville With Seventh Inning Homer

Freshman Abbey Welch Hit A Game-Winning Home Run To Help Longwood Defeat The Javelinas

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Longwood freshman Abbey Welch/LaPlata, Md. (McDonough) hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Lancers past Texas A&M Kingsville, 3-1, Friday afternoon during the Alamo Classic in San Antonio, Texas.  With the win, the Lancers improve to 16-9 on the season.  Head Coach Kathy Riley’s squad is scheduled to play again this evening as they begin bracket-play during the tournament.

Against Texas A&M Kingsville, Longwood was down 1-0 entering the seventh frame before Welch drove in the winning run with her first home run of the season – a two-out three-run shot over the left field fence.  Welch finished the outing with two hits in three at-bats, while junior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) went 1-for-2 at the plate.  Welch (9-4) also picked up the win on the mound, after entering the game in the fifth inning and throwing two innings in relief.
