SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Longwood University defeated Oklahoma-Panhandle, 2-1, in collegiate softball action Thursday night during the Alamo Classic in San Antonio, Texas. With the win, the Lancers improve to 15-9 on the season, while the Aggies drop to 8-21 overall. Longwood will return to action Friday afternoon as it faces Texas A&M-Kingsville at 1:30 p.m. before beginning bracket-play at 4:30 or 7 p.m.
Against Oklahoma-Panhandle, the two teams remained scoreless until junior Megan Camden/Bedford (Liberty) hit a solo home run in the fifth frame, giving the Lancers the 1-0 advantage. However, the Aggies answered with a solo home run of their own in the seventh, evening the game a run apiece and sending it into extra innings. In the eighth frame, junior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) hit a sacrifice to drive in sophomore Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange Co.) for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Camden closed out the contest with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with a run scored and an RBI, while junior Ashley Hawkins/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) went 1-for-2. Freshman Abbey Welch/LaPlata, Md. (McDonough) (8-4) earned the win after pitching the decisive eighth-inning.
