BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood picked up its fifth-straight win Friday afternoon after defeating Shippensburg 5-2 during the 2004 Longwood Spring Softball Classic at Lancer Field.  With the win, the Lancers improve to 7-6 on the season, while the visiting Raiders drop to 2-1 overall.  Head Coach Kathy Riley’s squad is scheduled to next play Saturday at 2:45 against Lees-McRae.  Shippensburg will begin the second day of the tournament at 10:15 a.m. as they take on West Virginia Wesleyan.

Against Shippensburg, Longwood trailed 1-0 after the first half of the opening inning, before exploding in the bottom half with all the runs it would need.  Junior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) drilled a three-run homer to give the host school the lead and the eventual victory.   Longwood added a run in the second inning after sophomore Shamana Washington/Rhoadsville (Orange Co.) hit an RBI-single to bring home freshman Courtney “Pepper” Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis)

Washington finished the contest a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, including an RBI and a run scored.  Freshman pitcher Abbey Welch/LaPlata, Md. (McDonough) picked up the win and improved her record on the mound to 3-2 after throwing a complete-game – her sixth on the season – with five strikeouts.

Jaime Dacey paced Shippensburg with her 2-for-3 performance at the plate, including a solo home run to right field, while Liz Corr provided the Eagles with two hits in four at-bats.  Dana Burgess (1-1) got the loss, throwing just 0.1 innings with four earned runs.
