DURHAM, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped baseball doubleheader at Duke University Monday in Durham, North Carolina, falling 6-4 in the first game and 10-3 in the second game. The Lancers are now 21-23 while the Blue Devils of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) improved to 33-14-1 overall, including 25-0 against non-ACC schools. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, May 7, at High Point University of the Big South Conference at 7 p.m. in North Carolina.
In the opener, Longwood trailed 3-0 after three innings as Duke scored a run in the first and two more in the third. The Lancers got on the board in the fourth with a run but the Blue Devils added three runs in their half of the fourth to lead 6-1. LU plated three runs in the sixth for the final two-run margin.
In the fourth sophomore Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (2-4, RBI) and senior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-3, 2 RBI) hit back-to-back doubles down the right-field and left-field lines, respectively, for the first run. In the sixth, sophomore Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-4) led-off with a single, and moved to third on a double to right-center field by freshman Justin Morreim/ Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (2-4). Havers followed with an RBI single to score Cerreto, and Morreim crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to center field from von Gersdorff. Havers scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by junior Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (0-0, RBI).
Freshman Garrett Lythgoe/Chesterfield (Motoaca) (2-3) took the pitching loss with the first 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs, five earned, with no strikeouts and one walk.
In the nightcap, Longwood again trailed 3-0 as Duke scored a run in the first and two more in the second. The Lancers scored runs in both the third and fourth innings to pull within 3-2 before the Blue Devils plated four runs in the fifth to lead 7-2. LU added a run in the eighth to make it 7-3 but the hosts added three more runs in the eighth for the final margin.
In the third, junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (0-4) walked and later scored on an RBI single by Morreim (3-5, RBI). In the fourth, von Gersdorff (1-4) doubled to left-center field and scored on an RBI double down the left-field line from sophomore Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (3-4, RBI). In the eighth, freshman Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (1-1) tripled down the left-field line and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-4, RBI). Cerreto (3-5) also collected three hits for the visitors.
Freshman Jonathan Watson/Richmond (L.C. Bird) (2-2) took the pitching loss with the first 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, five earned, with two strikeouts and five walks.
