BIG SOUTH BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME NOTES (PDF)
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Longwood University had two selections to the 2013 Big South Baseball All-Conference Teams, as announced Monday night at the tournament banquet for this week's Big South Baseball Championship presented by Triangle Rent A Car at Liberty University in Lynchburg. Junior captain
Alex Owens/Purcellville was selected to the All-Conference First Team, and sophomore
Brandon Vick/Newport News was named to the All-Academic Team.
Alex Owens, a third baseman, has started all 50 games for Longwood, batting .286 with four home runs, one triple, 18 doubles, 31 RBI, 28 runs and 28 walks. He has 14 multi-hit games, seven multi-RBI games, a .462 slugging percentage, a .380 on base percentage and a .914 fielding percentage with 46 putouts and 123 assists in 185 chances. Owens leads the Lancers in doubles, walks, total bases (84), sacrifice flies (4), total plate appearances (218), slugging percentage and on base percentage.
Brandon Vick, a left handed pitcher, has made 13 appearances with 12 starts and two complete games, while compiling a 5-5 record and a 4.06 earned run average over 77.2 innings with 27 strikeouts. He leads the team in innings pitched and has issued only 27 walks, while limiting the opposition to a .265 batting average. Academically, Vick majors in kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science and has attained a 3.11 cumulative GPA. He is a two-time Longwood Scholar-Athlete (2012, 2013) and earned the 2013 Longwood All-Academic Team Award.
VMI senior outfielder Rob Dickinson was voted 2013 Big South Baseball Player of the Year, while Campbell head coach Greg Goff was tabbed the 2013 Coach of the Year by the conference's head coaches. The coaches also voted Campbell hurler Ryan Thompson Pitcher of the Year and Coastal Carolina pitcher Seth Lamando the Big South Freshman of the Year. Justin Creel of Coastal Carolina and Brad Zebedis of Presbyterian College were voted Co-Scholar-Athletes of the Year by the league's sports information directors.
Longwood (24-26) has earned the No. 7 seed for the 2013 Big South Baseball Championship presented by Triangle Rent A Car and will play No. 2 seed and five-time defending Big South Champion Coastal Carolina (35-19) in the opening game of the double-elimination tournament on Tuesday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m. at the Liberty Baseball Stadium in Lynchburg.
