2010 VaSID All-State Men's Basketball Team Announced; Dana Smith Named Second-Team

2010 VaSID University Division All-State Men's Basketball Team (PDF)

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Radford University center Art Parakhouski has been selected as Player of the Year, the College of William and Mary head coach Tony Shaver is the Coach of the Year, and Liberty University guard Evan Gordon was picked as the Rookie of the Year in voting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) for the 2010 University Division All-State Men's Basketball Team.  Longwood University redshirt-senior Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) was named to the second-team after averaging a team-best 18.2 points along with 7.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.0 steals for the Lancers.

Parakhouski, a 6-11 senior from Minsk, Belarus, averaged a double-double of 21.4 points and 13.4 rebounds with 2.1 blocks while shooting 58% from the field and 56% at the free throw line. He led the Highlanders to a 19-12 record, including 13-5 in the Big South Conference, while earning Big South Player of the Year, 1st-Team All-Big South, USBWA All-District III Team, CollegeInsider.com Big South Player of the Year, Sporting News Big South Player of the Year, NABC District 3 1st-Team, Richmond Times-Dispatch All-State, and CollegeHoops.Net Mid-Major All-America Team. Parakhouski led Division I in rebounding and double-doubles (26), while ninth in field goal percentage and 12th in scoring with five 30-point games.

Shaver led William and Mary to a 22-11 record, including 12-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), as the Tribe advanced to the CAA Tournament championship for the second time in three years. He was selected as this year's CAA Coach of the Year and the NABC District 10 Coach of the Year as William and Mary posted its third-highest win total ever, and most wins since 1949-50. The Tribe tied a school-record with a 10-game winning streak (1929-30) and advanced to the first round of the NIT Tournament, falling on the road at eventual runners-up North Carolina 80-72.

Gordon, a 6-2 freshman from Indianapolis, Indiana, averaged 12.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.1 steals while shooting 46% from the field, including 36% on three-point field goals (42), and 72% at the free throw line. He led the Flames to a 15-16 record, including 10-8 in the Big South, while earning Big South All-Freshmen Team honors.

Parakhouski was joined on the VaSID 1st-Team by junior Kevin Anderson of Richmond, junior Malcolm Delaney of Virginia Tech, senior Gerald Lee of Old Dominion, and junior Larry Sanders of VCU. Anderson averaged 17.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.7 steals while being named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year for the Spiders (26-9) who advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Delaney averaged 20.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals while earning All-ACC 1st-Team honors for the Hokies (25-9) who advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals. Lee averaged 14.4 points and 4.8 rebounds while named All-CAA 1st-Team and CAA Tournament MVP for the regular season and CAA Tournament champion Monarchs (27-9) who advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round. Sanders averaged 14.4 points and 9.1 rebounds while named All-CAA 1st-Team and CAA Defensive Player of the Year for the Rams (27-9) who won the College Basketball Invitational.

The VaSID 2nd-Team includes Denzel Bowles of James Madison (20.8 points, 9.2 rebounds), Michael Deloach of Norfolk State (21.7 points, 4.4 rebounds), David Gonzalvez of Richmond (14.6 points, 4.2 rebounds), David Schneider of William and Mary (15.5 points, 6.0 rebounds), and Dana Smith of Longwood (18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds).

All-Independent 1st-Team … CollegeInsider.com Independents MVP … South Padre Island Invitational All-Tournament Team … led team in scoring (18.2), field goal attempts (408), free throws (142), free throw attempts (214), games (31), starts (31), and minutes (986) … sixth-best single season point total all-time (565) … had 29 double-figure scoring games, 28-straight to end season|career … had twelve 20-point games … had ten 10-rebound games … had 10 double-doubles … led team in scoring 21 times … led team in rebounding 13 times … ranked 59th in Division I scoring … only second player in program history with 1,500 career points (1,540, fourth all-time) and 700 career rebounds (708, second).

Honorable mention honors went to Dorenzo Hudson of Virginia Tech, Austin Kenon of VMI, Sylven Landesberg of Virginia, Quinn McDowell of William and Mary, and Joey Rodriguez of VCU.
