FARMVILLE, Va. -- Former Longwood University baseball standout Paul Heidler II/Warrenton recently signed a non-drafted free agent contract with the New York Yankees and has reported to the team's minor league instructional complex in Tampa, Florida.  A right-handed pitcher, he finished the 2009 season with a record of 4-1 and a 4.89 ERA through 42.1 innings with 43 strikeouts (9.14), including 13 appearances, eight starts, one complete game, and one save.

“We all at Longwood are very proud of Paul and look forward to following his development as a professional pitcher,” said head coach Charles 'Buddy' Bolding.  “The Yankee organization has a long history of success with pitchers, and Paul has substantial potential.  His 93 MPH fastball, sharp-breaking ball, and good mound presence should only improve with hard work, experience and overall development, and we, therefore, have great expectations for our tall right-hander wearing the pinstripes.”

Heidler (6-2, 195) led Longwood's pitching staff in winning percentage (.800) and ERA, while tied for the team lead in batters struck-out looking (15) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.14), and was among the top five in nine overall positive pitching statistical categories.  He pitched a career-best 6.2 innings vs. Lafayette College (March 20), and had a career-best eight strikeouts at Coppin State University (March 14).  Prior to this season, Heidler was a three-year starter in the outfield for the Lancers (.284, 5 HR, 8 3B, 27 2B, 65 RBI, 20 SB).

Paul is the son of Mark and Debbie Heidler of Warrenton and graduated from Notre Dame Academy.
