FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University’s Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) has been named to the 2008 VaSID University Division All-State Baseball Team, as selected by the state’s sports information directors. The College of William and Mary first baseman Mike Sheridan (.423, 15 HR, 72 RBI) was named as the Player of the Year, University of Virginia right-hander Michael Schwimer (3-1, 14 saves, 1.72 ERA) was chosen as Pitcher of the Year, James Madison University head coach Spanky McFarland (39-19, 20-9 CAA) is the Coach of the Year, and JMU right-hander Turner Phelps (8-0, 3.87 ERA) was picked as the Rookie of the Year.
Phil Cerreto, a rising junior third baseman, made the VaSID Second-Team after hitting a team-best .395 with one home run, one triple, 12 doubles, 30 RBI, 35 runs, a .492 slugging percentage, a .426 on-base percentage, and a .920 fielding percentage. He led the team in not only batting average but also in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits, total bases (87), sacrifice flies (5), games, (50), starts (49), and total plate appearances (199). Cerreto had 21 multi-hit games, nine multi-RBI games, and an 11-game hitting streak -- the multi-hit games and hitting streak both team-bests as well.
Longwood finished 2008 with a final record of 23-26-1, attaining its 27th overall 20-win campaign in the program’s 31-year history while 30th-year head coach Charles ‘Buddy’ Bolding completed the year with an overall coaching record of 818-435-4. The Lancers could return as many as 20 letterwinners for the 2009 campaign.
